The Landmarks & Wonders Quiz

The built world: monuments, ruins and wonders you can point to. This pack draws from 63 real places, and the quiz is not multiple choice: you get an unlabelled 3D globe, the name of a place, and 10 seconds to pin where it is. Points scale with how close you land and how fast you commit, so a near miss beats a wild stab and knowing beats guessing.

A landmark is a point, and a point is unforgiving

This pack is point-scored, which means there is no feature to fall back on. The Eiffel Tower is not "somewhere in France", it is a fixed coordinate in central Paris, and only the tight thirty-kilometre bullseye pays full marks. That makes landmarks the pack where knowing a name and knowing where it stands are two different things. Most players can list a dozen world landmarks; far fewer can place them precisely, because a monument lives in a country you half know and a city you might only know by its outline.

The saving grace is that landmarks cluster in famous cities, so the skill this pack builds is the same one the capitals pack rewards: know the city and the landmark places itself. The difference is that a landmark has no country-level forgiveness, so a 200-kilometre miss that a region pack would shrug off is a real loss here.

Four clusters that hold the built world

The European core. The Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, the Colosseum, the Acropolis, the Alhambra, the Sagrada Família, Mont-Saint- Michel, the Palace of Versailles, Neuschwanstein Castle, the Brandenburg Gate and the Leaning Tower of Pisa all sit in western and southern Europe, the densest cluster in the pack. The latitude runs from about 37 to 49 degrees north, and the longitude from Iberia to Greece. If a clue names a European monument, the pin belongs in that corridor, and the city usually pins it for you: the Colosseum is Rome, the Acropolis is Athens, the Sagrada Família is Barcelona.

The Asian megaprojects. The Taj Mahal, the Great Wall at Badaling, the Forbidden City, the Terracotta Army, the Burj Khalifa, the Petronas Towers, the Sheikh Zayed Mosque, Angkor Wat, Borobudur and the Shwedagon Pagoda span the continent from India to Southeast Asia. They are not interchangeable. The Taj Mahal is Agra in northern India; the Great Wall at Badaling is near Beijing; the Burj Khalifa is Dubai. The error here is treating "Asian landmark" as one cluster, because the distance from Agra to Angkor Wat is over three thousand kilometres.

The Americas. Machu Picchu, Christ the Redeemer, the Statue of Liberty, the Golden Gate Bridge, Mount Rushmore and the CN Tower are split between North and South. Machu Picchu sits in the Peruvian Andes at about 13 degrees south; Christ the Redeemer overlooks Rio de Janeiro; the Statue of Liberty is in New York Harbour. The latitude span is over fifty degrees, so sorting by hemisphere first is the cheapest habit you can build.

The African and Pacific outliers. The Pyramids of Giza, Table Mountain and the Sydney Opera House are the landmarks that sit far from the dense clusters. Giza is on the edge of Cairo at roughly 30 degrees north; Table Mountain guards Cape Town at 34 degrees south; the Sydney Opera House sits on the harbour at 34 degrees south. They reward the player who knows the single anchor for their country, because nothing nearby helps you triangulate.

What makes a landmarks run hard

The pack's 63 places include genuine confusables: the Golden Gate Bridge and the Golden Pavilion are not the same thing and sit an ocean apart. The Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia are both in Istanbul, but the Winter Palace is in St Petersburg, and Saint Basil's Cathedral is in Moscow, so the Russian monuments are not interchangeable. Meteora is in Greece but not in Athens; Mont-Saint-Michel is in France but not in Paris. The discipline this pack builds is precision: a landmark does not score for its country, it scores for its city. For the systematic way to build the city map this pack rewards, the twelve-anchor method sets the fixed points. For telling near-twin names apart, The World's Most Confusable Places names the pairs that cost the most points.

How a run works

A run is 10 places sampled fresh from the pack each time, timed, and scored server-side onto the pack's own leaderboard. Your best run stands as your entry, and you can grind it down (or up) as long as you like. Free accounts get one ranked run a day; premium is unlimited.
